The Academy of Magical Arts is Hiring a Line Cook/Prep Cook Near Hollywood, CA

The Academy of Magical Arts (home of the world-famous Magic Castle) is the most unique private clubhouse in the world. The Magic Castle is one of Los Angeles' most sought-after clubs and strives to create amazing experiences for both guests and staff. We are looking for Line Cooks who care deeply about the experience they’re creating for people through food, thrive on being part of a busy line, and are looking to grow their abilities and careers to join our culinary team. We are looking for appetizer, line and prep cooks. All cooks work under the general supervision of the Executive Chef.

Previous line cooking experience in high-end, fast-paced restaurants is a plus but not mandatory.

Shifts are generally 2 - 10 pm daily including weekends. We also serve Brunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Description of Duties

  • Follow recipes and prepare food to order as specified by the Chef
  • Coordinate timing of dish completion with other cooks, as directed by Chef
  • Accommodate special requests and dietary restrictions as directed by Chef
  • Ensures clean and orderly workspace by adhering to public health codes, sanitation, and safety policies
  • Verifies product stock and rotates as necessary
  • Completes approved closing duties at the end of each shift by organizing, cleaning, and sanitizing workspace

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintains effective communication skills by interacting professionally with co-workers
  • Implements and supports all AMA initiatives and programs as requested by management
  • Other duties may be assigned by management

Minimum Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bachelors or Associate degree in Culinary Arts is advantageous but not required
  • Ability to operate the following equipment is required: convection and conventional oven, fryer, broiler, salamander, slice, mixer, food processor, dishwasher, and all small wares and utensils
  • To perform this job successfully, the individual should possess the math skills required to complete food preparation and ordering job functions
  • The ability to read food orders in English. The ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, including safe temperatures at which ingredients must be kept and to which food must be prepared to avoid foodborne illness
  • Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating on complex dishes.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of other people, such as waitstaff, dishwashers, management and sometimes customers
  • Calm demeanor to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment 
  • Accountability for the dishes they prepare measuring up to the expectations of management and customers alike
  • Comprehension and organization to follow direct orders and recipes and to correctly prepare dishes to the standards of the restaurant
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to handle tools, such as knife techniques for chopping, slicing, cutting and dicing
  • Ability to stand in one place for hours at a time, handle extreme heat and work shifts
  • ServSafe Certification/Food Handler’s license
